Deep Relaxation

Lesson 4 of 4

Total Relaxation of Body and Mind

Deep relaxation is the practice of scanning through the body with awareness, releasing tension and sending love to each part. In Plum Village, we practice this daily. It is a gift we give to our body — a chance to rest, to heal, and to be embraced by the Earth beneath us.

Feelings come and go like clouds in a windy sky. Conscious breathing is my anchor.

Practice Instructions

Lie down on your back in a comfortable position, arms at your sides, palms facing up. Close your eyes and become aware of your whole body. Begin at the top of your head and slowly move your attention downward — forehead, eyes, cheeks, jaw, neck, shoulders, arms, hands. With each area, breathe in and send your awareness there; breathe out and release any tension. Continue through your chest, belly, hips, legs, and feet. Allow 15 to 20 minutes for the full practice. Rest in stillness as long as you wish.
